Advancement in Testing Phase for Sydney Metro City and Southwest Line
The Sydney Metro City and Southwest line achieved a significant milestone as a metro train successfully completed a swift three-minute crossing beneath Sydney Harbour from Victoria Cross Station to the CBD. This achievement marked the initiation of an intensive testing phase on the line, involving multiple trains being tested at higher speeds.
Anticipated for next year, the metro trains will offer a "turn-up-and-go" service, swiftly shuttling passengers between Victoria Cross Station and Barangaroo Station within three minutes while reaching speeds up to 100km/h in the Sydney Harbour metro tunnel. Victoria Cross Station, one of six new city stations set to open in 2024, promises enhanced connectivity between North Sydney's bustling business district and the CBD.
Progress on constructing Victoria Cross Station is well advanced, with completion at more than 85%. The platform level inside Australia's largest railway cavern, 31 meters below ground, is finalized. Installation of lifts, escalators, and ticket gates is nearing completion, with final touches, including station entrances and adjacent public areas, expected to conclude by early 2024.
The station's construction posed logistical challenges, requiring innovation from Sydney Metro delivery partners Lendlease, as all materials and equipment were maneuvered through a small access point of just 2.5m². Over 5000 individuals contributed to the station's delivery, creating over 50,000 job opportunities throughout the project's lifecycle.
Victoria Cross Station is anticipated to cater to approximately 15,150 passengers during morning peak hours upon opening, alleviating pressure on North Sydney Station and providing a rapid transport link for business, education, and residential areas.
Minister for Transport Jo Haylen emphasized the transformative impact of the metro, highlighting its potential to become the fastest means of transit across the harbor. With extensive testing underway since April 2023, encompassing over 2500 hours and 12,500km, the upcoming Sydney Metro City and Southwest line promises to redefine the city's transportation landscape upon its launch.
