Altona Pier Redevelopment in Victoria Approaches Final Stages
The $11.9 million redevelopment of Altona Pier in Victoria is progressing as planned and is set to be completed this summer. Victoria's Minister for Ports and Freight, Melissa Horne, visited the site to witness the advanced construction of the 310-meter-long pier. All the piles have been installed from The Esplanade foreshore into Port Phillip Bay, and the installation of decking is underway.
The redevelopment project aims to improve accessibility and safety, incorporating features like enhanced lighting, handrails, and an emergency vehicle turning bay. Most of the pier's precast concrete headstocks are now in place, and hardwood timber decking has been laid on a significant section of the pier. The new Altona Pier is expected to attract tourists, benefit traders, and serve the community.
Efforts are also underway to demolish the old pier, salvaging suitable timber for reuse in the Altona Foreshore redevelopment and other public projects. Parks Victoria is working closely with stakeholders and the community to minimize any disruptions during the construction.
Additionally, the Victorian Government has allocated $46 million in the 2023-24 State Budget for the reconstruction of Dromana Pier, St Leonards Pier, and Warneet Jetties, along with essential repairs to Workshops Pier in Williamstown. This investment follows previous commitments to rebuild and carry out critical work on piers and jetties at various locations, further enhancing waterfront infrastructure in the region.
