Botany Rail Duplication: Major Milestone Upcoming

Botany Rail Duplication: Major Milestone Upcoming

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has announced that an upcoming five-day period of major works marks a project milestone for the Botany Rail Duplication project.

The works will be carried out by contractor John Holland, and includes the demolition and installation of a new rail bridge deck at O’Riordan Street.

The Federal Government is fully funding ARTC to deliver the $400 million Port Botany Rail Line Duplication and Cabramatta Loop project, which will deliver better access to global export markets via Port Botany, improve freight supply chains across New South Wales and help ease local road congestion.

The works will take place from 2:00pm 25 August until 2:00pm 30 August. Freight services will not have access to Port Botany or Cooks River during this period, but there will be no impact to passenger train services.

Other works to be completed around Mascot and Botany during the shutdown include track work, cable relocation, drainage works, and signalling work.

ARTC Group Executive Major Construction Projects, Mike Zambelli, said that this transformational project will duplicate the remaining 2.9km section of single line track to Port Botany, allowing freight to be moved more efficiently and effectively, and will help meet future demand where the freight task is predicted to increase by 77 per cent by 2036.

“Each extra freight train travelling on the Port Botany Rail Line will take up to 54 trucks off Sydney’s roads and that will be well received by local road users,” Mr Zambelli said.
